You will see many Amish furniture shops on your next visit to Ohio’s Amish Country. People from all over the country and the world visit the area to explore and experience Amish culture. That lifestyle is strongly represented in their traditions of quality furniture making. If you are looking to furnish your home, we recommend using Donna’s as your home base while you visit all the shops. If you are not currently looking for new furniture, we still recommend stopping into a few shops to witness the value and features of Amish made furniture. Why should you purchase Amish made furniture? It is made from ethically sourced hardwood. Most Amish furniture makers use real hardwood from North America. In comparison, chain furniture stores often feature engineered wood. Making furniture from engineered wood makes it cheaper to purchase but it is also cheaper in quality. Furniture made from real hardwood is more exquisite. The dining room tables boast the beauty of the natural knots and grain of the wood. Everything they create is a unique, one-of-a-kind masterpiece. The Amish are master woodworkers. Since they do not use electricity, their woodworking techniques are meticulous. The time and effort spent results in sturdy craftsmanship. You will be supporting fair labor wages and safe work environments. Oftentimes you will meet the actual person or people who make the furniture. Amish furniture is often custom-made. We all know the trouble of having specific room dimensions and then looking for a piece of furniture that will fit. The dining table you end up choosing might not be your favorite style but at least it fits in your breakfast nook. And there is never the option to simply request a table that is two inches shorter. When you work with an Amish furniture marker, you can pick the design, the wood, the varnish, and the size. In the end, you have a piece of furniture that is perfect for your style and perfect for the size of your home. Amish furniture is meant to last a lifetime or more. When you purchase Amish furniture, you are buying an heirloom that can be enjoyed for generations to come. What are some of the best shops to visit for furniture in Ohio Amish Country? Dutch Craft Furniture of Berlin – The showroom features 10,000 square feet of furniture for every room in your house from the nursery to the kitchen to the office. Their white glove delivery service is available in all 48 of the contiguous states. Talk with them about custom cabinets for your laundry room or closet. Berlin Furnishings – Want to watch furniture being made while you shop? Visitors can watch the on-site builder in action from the comfort of the show room. You can purchase furniture and decor directly from the showroom or have a custom piece designed for you. Pleasant View Furniture – What started as a small two-story building in 1993 has grown to a third-generation run 20,000 square foot showroom. Everything in the store is made in Holmes County. The solid hardwood is harvested by local suppliers. Everything can be customized to match your style. Have a color you need to match? They are happy to help out. They even carry locally made upholstered furniture. Schrock’s Heritage Furniture – The entire line of furniture here is made by hand by Amish craftsmen. Want an easy sign of the quality of their pieces? The backing on their furniture is always wood, not cardboard. Choose from a variety of species of wood including oak, cherry, quarter sawn oak, maple, Ambrosia maple, walnut, and hickory. Their website features a page of color options if you want to start thinking about your room design before you arrive. Little Cottage Co. – Why should the inside of your home have all the fun? Little Cottage Co. specializes in Amish made outdoor structure kits. Check out their line of sheds, playhouses, greenhouses, chicken coop, and dog kennels. Your dog will feel like a king or queen in their own Victorian cozy kennel. Troyer Furniture – Troyer takes pride in educating their customers so everyone knows that the best choices are being made. They built their business on Amish made furniture and also feature the highest quality upholstered furniture they can find. Amish furniture styles in the showroom include Mission, Shaker, and Craftsman. Want the best furniture you can find but need a little help paying for it? Troyer’s can offer financing, including 90 days same as cash. Honestly, there are so many shops to visit while in Ohio Amish Country. Stop at one, two, or ten. Be sure to tell us your favorites so we can share with other guests.

The temperatures outside have shifted to romantic cuddle weather. Grab a cozy sweater, a cup of tea, and bask in the warmth of a fireplace in one of our log cabins. Before you get too comfortable, remember that the change in the weather also means that the winter holidays are right around the corner. Luckily there are many local shops and artisans in the Berlin area. You can find a gift for everyone on your list (and perhaps a few things for yourself as well) and still have plenty of time for an evening of snuggling. When you shop in Ohio’s Amish Country you know you are supporting the creative energies of a real person or family rather than a huge corporation. So many of the shops have been owned by the same families for generations. That energy and devotion is reflected in the quality of the gifts you will find. Here are a few places that we recommend for all of your gift shopping needs while on your next getaway to Donna’s Premier Lodging. Amish Country Soap & Candle Co. Amish Country Essentials has been in business since 2005 but the family ties go back much further than that. The process of making natural soap can be traced back for 200 years in this family. The current owner and his wife learned the process from his grandmother. Today they make handmade soap, lotion, organic shampoo, lip balms, deodorants, salves, moisturizers, and more. Think these types of stores only have gifts for women? Think again. There is a section for men including old fashioned shave soap. Troyer’s Sweet Shop Did someone say chocolate? This third-generation chocolate shop still uses grandma’s original recipe from 1960 for their caramel. You will find everything from classic turtles to orange truffles to peanut butter fudge. The inn loves this shop so much we use them for our romantic hand-dipped chocolate add-on . This is definitely the shop where you need to budget a little extra to pick up something for yourself. If you are traveling with a group of ten or more, you can take part in the process and dip your own buckeyes. Call in advance for the unique and tasty experience. David Warther Carvings This is a two-for-one stop with a museum of delicate ivory carvings and a fine gift shop. The museum collection houses 80 miniature carvings of sailing ships from throughout history. All of them are created from legal antique ivory and ebony wood. David Warther carved his first ship at age six and has not stopped yet. The gift shop is known for its unusual and ever-changing assortment of products with an emphasis on home decor. Mixed among the Amish brooms, glassware, and pottery are quirky children’s toys, puzzles, and jewelry. P. Graham Dunn The 20,000 square foot retail store is located within the manufacturing facility. There are windows and viewing areas throughout the store that allow visitors to get a birds-eye view of the entire production process. P. Graham Dunn started as a family-owned business in 1976. In 2019 it transitioned to become an employee-owned business. This is a great spot to customize gifts; they have lasers in the store and can do custom engravings on the spot. Personalizable gifts include mugs, photo frames, ornaments, pizza cutters, key chains, cutting boards, and multi-tools. The shop also boasts collections of home decor, housewares, outdoor decor, and Christmas-themed gifts. The Pottery Niche This women-led, veteran-owned, and second generation-owned shop specializes in hand-crafted and hand-painted pottery from Poland. Every item in the store is beautiful and also practical. Have you ever purchased a gorgeous serving bowl only to let it sit unused in a cupboard for fear of breaking it? The glaze used on this pottery makes it chip resistant and easy to clean. The kitchenware is also microwave, oven, dishwasher, and freezer safe. Honestly, you may choose to replace everything in your kitchen with pieces from this shop. You will find traditional patterns like “Peacock” as well as more intricate designs that have been signed by the artist. Holiday items from Christmas to Easter to Halloween are always on display regardless of the season. Guggisberg Cheese As the saying goes… “often imitated, never duplicated.” Guggisberg is home of the original baby swiss cheese. The second-generation company has grown and now distributes throughout the United States. We suggest stopping in for yourself to sample one (or many) of their 60 types of cheese. Do not worry about keeping the cheese fresh yourself. Guggisberg can ship throughout the country. Everyone loves getting food as gifts and you can be confident that you are gifting quality because you have personally tried the product.

The air is crisp, the leaves are changing, and everyone wants to get outside and enjoy the season. Fall is an important time in Amish Country as farmers get to reap the benefits of their hard work. Lucky for visitors to the area, there is always more apples, pumpkins, and fall fun to go around. Come to Berlin, Ohio to celebrate the harvest season with us. Farm Fresh Pumpkins and Apples If the changing leaves are the first fall image that comes to mind, then pumpkins and apples are certainly the second and third most iconic representations of fall. Pumpkins are perfect decorations whether you carve them into jack-o-lanterns or not. Apples are one of the most versatile fruits since they can be eaten whole, included in salads, or made into amazing desserts. Start a new fall tradition by going straight to the farm and into the fields to choose your pumpkins and apples. Hershberger’s Farm and Bakery is a fall treat for all your senses. See the fields full of produce. Smell the fresh baked goods. Hear the animals in the petting zoo. Touch and carry a heavy pumpkin. And, of course, taste the delicious food. Hershberger’s is an Ohio Amish Country establishment that should not be missed. They have already started harvesting pumpkins and making pies for 2023. Moreland Fruit Farm has different items available to pick yourself depending on the season. They start with strawberries in June and end with apples and pumpkins in the fall. If you want to see and experience the fields in a more relaxing way, enjoy a horse drawn wagon ride through the pumpkin fields. Ramseyer Farms has many types of pumpkins that you can pick yourself. This is a great place for specialty pumpkins such as white pumpkins, pie pumpkins, Cinderella pumpkins, and Fairytale pumpkins. They charge admission in September and October but that fee gives you access to 50 different activities. Try the country coaster, the chalk truck, the tractor pull, the rubber duck races, the giant rocking chair, and multiple mazes (see below). Hillcrest Orchard of Walnut Creek Ltd boasts 75 acres of orchards that grow 22 varieties of apples. Their store is open seasonally from August until March. Schedule time to sip their signature apple cider while enjoying views of Mud Valley from the deck. Corn Mazes If you love a challenge, then corn mazes are just the activity for you. These mazes may be temporary but that does not lessen the fun and excitement. Come back year after year for a new maze. Nickajack Farms grows 15 acres of tall corn each year just to create a maze. They are open every day from September 15 until October 31 for their Pumpkin Days Fall Festival. The event has been steadily growing for 19 years as the farm adds more and more activities. Enjoy the maze, hayrides, pony rides, peddle carts, pumpkin bowling, food trucks and more. Take the wagon grain out to the pumpkin fields to choose from 75 varieties of pumpkins, gourds, and squash. Ramseyer Farms features two corn mazes each year. The Ohio Maze includes two miles of trails on eight acres but everything is labeled to help you find your way. The maze also boasts 275+ signs with information about the state, sports figures, famous Ohioans, and more. It is both fun and educational. The Mystery Maze is also two miles of trails on eight acres but it is a bit more challenging. Ramseyer recommends scheduling 30-60 minutes or more to complete the Mystery Maze. Looking for more maze fun? Ramseyer has a potato box maze, straw bale maze, rope maze, math maze, and mind bender maze. Events and Festivals Ohio’s Amish Country Quilt Festival – September 7-9, 2023 – The festival features classes and trunk shows, a vendor mall, quilt show, and quilt contest. Admission to the vendor mall and quilt show is free if you attend a paid class. Tuscarawas County Fair – September 18-24, 2023 – The week-long event has a jam-packed schedule of activities with rides, livestock events, and evening entertainment. Woosterfest – September 29-30, 2023 – The annual Oktoberfest-style festival is held in downtown Wooster. There is free entertainment, food vendors, a bier and winegarten, and hilarious activities for all ages. Do not miss the beer stein race, corn hole tournament, sausage toss, or wiener dog race.

Trees really are magnificent plants. Many give us beautiful pink or white flowers in the spring. In summertime, they are covered in verdant greens. In the fall, they stun us with oranges, reds, and yellows. They are even quite lovely when their bare branches are covered in snow. Fall is especially beautiful in Holmes County; we have been ranked as one of the top ten places in the world to see the fall foliage by National Geographic. Since Ohio is such a large state, the leaves change at different times depending on the location. In some years, it is possible to see the changes start in August or September. Peak is typically the second week of October in Northern Ohio, the third week in October in Central Ohio and along the shores of Lake Erie, and towards the end of October in Southern Ohio. If you are coming to Berlin, Ohio this autumn, here are some of the best places to see those amazing fall colors near Amish Country. Mohican State Park The park boasts thousands of wooded acres only 30 minutes from Berlin. It is a great way to see the leaves while experiencing the scents and sounds of the autumn air. The park features multiple trails for all levels of hikers. If you want an easy stroll, consider the 0.75-mile easy Pleasant Hill Trail. It follows along the shores of the lake. Depending on the way the sun is shining, you may get lucky with a picture of the leaves reflected in the lake. If you are ready for a bit more effort, the Lyons Fall Trail is two miles in length and graded as moderate to difficult. Your determination will be rewarded with two waterfalls. Of course, you can always use one of the six picnic areas to linger over lunch amidst the beauty of the trees. If you are planning to visit Mohican State Park, you should note that the leaves here tend to change a little earlier than the rest of the state. Gateway to Amish County Scenic Byway Head west from Berlin to this 30-mile scenic byway. You can pick up the byway in either Greer or Brinkhaven, both locations are approximately 30 minutes from Berlin. The trails from each meet up in Danville before continuing south to Martinsburg which is about one hour from Berlin. These byways were once vacated railroad beds. The citizens of Knox County saw a great opportunity to transform the railroad beds into sightseeing trails through the towns and countryside. As you drive along in the fall months, you will see the reds, oranges, and yellows of maples, oak, and buckeyes alongside vast fields of corn. A highlight of this byway can be found near Brinkhaven. The “Bridge of Dreams” is the second longest covered bridge in the state and the third longest in the country. The 370-foot long bridge was constructed in 1920 to serve as a railroad bridge over the Mohican River Valley. In the late 1990s the bridge was converted to a pedestrian bridge making it the longest covered bridge for pedestrians. Today, the bridge is shared by pedestrians, those on horseback, and Amish horse and buggies. Covered Bridge Scenic Byway Is there anything more bucolic than a covered bridge with the changing leaves in the background? The Covered Bridge Scenic Byway features four romantic covered bridges as it traverses the Ohio countryside. Wear picture worthy outfits and stop at each bridge for a sweet selfie or ask another tourist for an endearing full-length photograph. This is a great opportunity for the perfect Christmas card photo. The 35-mile byway runs parallel to the Little Muskingum River and includes ten markers that allow visitors to explore on a self-guided tour. Along with the bridges, the tour stops at a mail pouch barn, an oil well, a boarding house, a general store, an historic stone house, and a small cemetery. If you decide to stop at each of the markers, it is recommended that you allot four hours to see everything. If you travel the byway from north to south, you will start in Woodsfield which is approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes from Berlin. The southern end of the byway can be found in Marietta which is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes from Berlin.

Berlin is a town that thrives on a combination of American spirit and Amish culture. Tourists flock to the area to experience the small-town life. A stroll down Main Street is a chance to feel like you have gone back to a quieter, slower time. It is also a perfect opportunity to pick up a travel memento for yourself or a gift for a friend or family member. This is a sample of the stores and attractions you will find along Berlin’s Main Street. What shop is in the second oldest building in town? Country From the Heart is located in a building that was constructed in 1818. It served as a residence until 1994 when it became home to a shop filled with primitive reproductions and folk art. Owner Tammy J. Weaver is a folk artist; many of her pieces are featured in the store. The shelves are also filled with shaker boxes, coverlet pillows, hand-painted game boards, paper mache, and hooked, braided, and woven rugs. What store has locally made souvenirs? Amish Cotton Goods is like “an in-person etsy shop.” The cute, little shop is filled with goods made by local artisans. Items recently highlighted on their Facebook page include handbags with mix and match straps, dainty pieces of jewelry, organic all-natural deodorant, and signature “Blame it all on Rumspringa” t-shirts. What store smells the best? Amish Country Soap & Candle Co. : The scents of lilac, rosemary, spearmint, lavender, and lemongrass greet you as you enter this shop. They have nine generations of experience making soap so you know you are purchasing a luxurious product. They also sell lotions, salves, bug spray, essential oils, and candles. Do not eat the original muffin candle; it looks delicious but is best when the wick is lit. What shop is the coziest? Helping Hands Quilt Shop specializes in locally made quilts, fabric, and quilting accessories. Just stepping into the store will make you want to curl up under a warm quilt. Looking for a truly one-of-a-kind item? They can help you create a custom-made quilt. Stop in on the first or last Tuesday of each month to see the quilters in action. What shop started as a fundraiser? Kelly’s Boutique features women’s fashion, baby clothes, jewelry, home decor, and inspirational items. In 2003, Kelly decided to make jewelry to help fundraise for a music department for children. That simple act turned into a store built out of love. Return home with a whole new outfit from Kelly’s. What store is the sweetest? If your taste buds could have a favorite store, it would be the Main Street Fudge & Popcorn Co . They boast 80 flavors of homemade popcorn, 50 flavors of fudge, and 40 flavors of saltwater taffy. Try an old favorite like caramel corn or sample their unique mango popcorn. The self-proclaimed “sweetest place in town” has been family owned and operated since 2013. What shop is a blend of old and new? The Red Poppy is one of the newer stores on Main Street. They know that farmhouse decor does not have to look old. It can be chic and modern. Step beyond the quaint porch to find wreaths, kitchen items, locally made candles, gifts for children, signs, and locally made coffee. What store has useful works of art? All art is useful as it brings joy and creativity to the world. The art at The Pottery Niche is also made to be actually used. Inside you will find hand-crafted and hand-painted pottery from Poland. Their plates, mugs, bakeware, and serveware are microwave and dishwasher safe but also beautiful works of art fit for any pottery collection. What three stores are a place to shop and a tourist experience? Sol’s In Berlin is the largest arts and crafts mall in the area. They also boast buggy rides, homemade ice cream, and kettle corn. The “mall” is actually three stores: Sol’s Palace, Sol’s Exchange, and Sol’s Kit-N-Kaboodle. Shoppers will find over 300 booths ranging from pet frames to pillows, and furniture to handbags. Make sure to set aside enough time to truly experience Sol’s. Which store is the most magical? Catalpa Trading Company sells magic books and products. It is also home of Madhrikan’s Theater of Magic. Purchase tickets to one of the magic shows then browse through the store to pick up a few tricks of your own.
