Fall is just around the corner and Amish Country is filled with events and festivals that you won’t want to miss. Not only are there an
abundance of things to do this fall in Ohio’s Amish Country, but Holmes County, Ohio was recently named one of the "Top 10 Places To See Autumn Leaves"
in the WORLD by National Geographic!! View the full Top Ten List HERE.
If you find yourself asking which of the many fall festivals in Amish Country you should attend then you must read my blog below for three of my most favorite area fall festivals. It was hard to pick just three; but here they are.....
- Swiss Festival in Sugarcreek, Ohio – October 2 & 3
The nearby town of Sugarcreek (also known as the “Little Switzerland” of Ohio) hosts a yearly festival called the Swiss Festival. Often times referred
to as the most popular festival in the state of Ohio, it boasts LOTS of actives including a Swiss Cheese eating contest, live music and entertainment,
wine tasting, two parades, lots of delicious food stands, rides, games, a yodeling contests and more!
One of my favorite events of the Swiss Festival is the Steinstossen or stone throwing. In this traditional Swiss sport, male contestants hold a 138 pound stone over their head and hurl it as far as they can. As you can imagine it is greatly entertaining! Female contests also can enter and throw 75 pound stones….maybe someday I’ll enter.
- Berlin Harvest Fest & Rib Cook-off in Berlin, Ohio - September 12
Berlin’s biggest event of the year is surely something you don’t want to miss. Numerous food stands will line the streets of downtown Berlin featuring
mouth-watering ribs along with other delectable dishes such as corn on the cob, homemade ice cream, tasty fry pies, and good, old-fashioned, Amish-style
noodles and mashed potatoes. Sample them all and vote for your favorite or mingle with the locals while humming along to the many live bands that will
be featured through-out the day. Most area shops will feature sidewalk sales and specials. The day ends with a parade through downtown at 6:00 pm with
nearly 100 floats, plus antique cars, and the Hiland High School marching band.
- Charm Days in Charm, Ohio – October 9 & 10
Charm is a beautiful little town just a short drive south of Berlin. Boasting rolling hills and valleys, quaint Amish houses festooned with brightly-colored
mums, and acres of picturesque fields and trees; it’s not hard to see why Charm is one of the must-see spots in Ohio’s Amish Country. What’s more, during the second weekend of October, this quiet corner of Holmes County bursts into
life during Charm Days, a two-day festival that boasts some of the most unique events in Ohio.
Charm Days started about 30 years ago as a way for Charm area businesses to show their appreciation to their customers. It has now grown into a two day huge event featuring all sorts of activities: different contests including a volleyball tournament, a cornhole tournament, and a pie baking contest (yummy!), delicious chicken barbecue, special sales, live music, and a flea market. You can also enter to win $1,000!! Another event favorite is the popular Wooly Worm Derby, where participants coax a wooly worm up a string! To view the 2015 schedule click HERE. Be sure to mark your calendars and visit Charm Days this October!
