“Fall” in Love in Ohio Amish Country

Autumn is a time that many people seek out the changing fall colors in Ohio Amish Country. Imagine the photographs of covered bridges and Amish barns against the backdrop of stunning fall foliage. People often ask how to know the best time to schedule a trip to Berlin, Ohio for the fall colors. There are a couple helpful tools to assist with your planning:

The Explore Fall Foliage Map has a handy sliding scale so you can see the predicted color for different parts of Ohio on specific days. The scale starts at “Little to No Color” and extends to “Past Peak Color.” According to this map’s estimates, “Peak Color” in Berlin will start around October 20 and end around October 30.
The Farmer’s Almanac has a helpful animated map showing the predicted progression of the colors across the United States. The page also lists their choices for the top 21 places to see the fall foliage. Cuyahoga Valley National Park made the list and it is only about an hour north of Donna’s Premier Lodging. The entire drive will be filled with amazing views around every corner. The fall foliage in Ohio Amish Country is spectacular and the area also celebrates the season with events and festivals. Many of the options have a spooky flair and all have a touch of local flavor. Add one of these fun activities to your Berlin fall foliage getaway.

Charm Days – October 11-12, 2024: Charm, Ohio is approximately five miles from Donna’s Premier Lodging. Every year, they commemorate the fall season with a weekend long festival. Popular events at the festival include horseback games on Saturday morning and the Wooly Worm Derby where entrants use any means possible to encourage their wooly worm contestant to climb up the string first. Benefit lunch stands are spread throughout town so you will not go hungry. Fall in Charm truly is “charming.”
The Farm at Walnut Creek Fall Festivals – October 11-12, October 14 (extra date for Columbus Day), October 18-19, and October 25-26, 2024: What is more iconic than a day at the farm in the fall. Walnut Creek has lots of activities planned for each weekend throughout the month. Festival weekends include a pumpkin slingshot, a horse-drawn wagon ride, Percheron Draft Horses helping to make molasses, and lots of food options. Note that the festival weekends are Fridays and Saturdays.
Lantern Tours at the Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum – October 18-19, and 25-26, 2024. Do you love ghostly tales and legends? Do you love trains and railroads? This is the perfect combination of both. The 90-minute tour takes guests through the museum guided only by an oil lantern while a staff storyteller entertains everyone with local lore. Pro-tip: wear closed-toe shoes for this experience.
Apple Butter Stirrin’ Festival in Historic Roscoe Village – October 18-20, 2024: When a fall festival has been organized for 53 straight years, you know it must be fun. 10,000 annual festival-goers cannot be wrong. The weekend boasts homemade apple butter, more than 100 craft and food vendors, and history and legend tours. The scenic Roscoe village is approximately a 30-minute drive from Donna’s Premier Lodging.
Boo in the ‘Burg -- October 26, 2024: Millersburg knows that Halloween is not just for kids. Adults can sample wine and craft beer while listening to music by local band, Borderline. That same evening, you can take self-guided ghost walks through the Victorian House Museum. Members of the Ghost Guild will be available throughout the 28-room mansion to answer questions about paranormal activities and ghost encounters. This is not a haunted house activity but the stories you hear may still leave you spooked. It is a great activity to attend with someone who will hold your hand throughout the experience.

Five Best Reasons to Visit Amish Country During the Week

Many people take long weekends when they want a quick getaway. Have you ever considered taking a long “weekend” in the middle of the week? A midweek Ohio Amish Country getaway can be the perfect vacation. Arrive at Donna’s Premier Lodging on a Monday. Spend Tuesday and Wednesday exploring the sites. Head home on a Thursday before the crowds arrive. Of course, that is just a rough suggested itinerary. You can plan your trip however it works best for you. Here are five reasons you should plan your midweek getaway now.

Sunday is a day of rest for the Amish.

The Amish spend Sundays in church and with their families. That means the shops, markets, and roadside stands will be closed. In other words, if you arrive on a Friday evening and depart on a Monday morning, you will only have one full day to experience Amish culture. If you plan the same length vacation but start on a Monday, you will have two full days of Amish culture. This is opposite of many cities where certain restaurants and shops are typically closed on Mondays and/or Tuesdays. Come to Ohio Amish Country during the middle of week to make the most of your trip.
Spending time together during the week is romantic.

When was the last time you “played hooky?” We are not suggesting that you skip work without telling anyone, but taking time off in the middle of the week for a quick getaway still has a sense of getting away with something. Add your significant other to the equation and it adds an extra spark to your trip and your relationship. Picture it, everyone else you know is sitting at work while you and your partner are laughing together, eating all the food, and exploring Ohio Amish Country. Make midweek vacations your special thing together. An extra perk to a midweek getaway is that you will still have the two adjoining weekends to relax at home or get chores done.
There tend to be fewer crowds.

Again, since more people take these getaways on the weekends, there will be fewer people to contend with on a Monday or Tuesday. For example, the line for a hearty Amish meal at Boyd & Wurthmann can get quite long. The line is understandable because this restaurant has been serving up quality meals since 1938. When you visit Ohio Amish Country during the middle of the week there is a higher chance of a shorter line at many restaurants. Keep in mind that Boyd & Wurthmann only serves dinner on Friday and Saturday but they are open for breakfast and lunch six days a week. Do not miss the meatloaf special on Wednesdays.

Do you love taking photos together at quaint, romantic places? Do you dislike waiting your turn while every other tourist takes their photos? Imagine pulling up to a covered bridge and seeing no one else around. You can take all the time you want to enjoy the scenery and take pictures of each other. Most cell phones have a timer option so you can get a photo together without having to ask a bystander. Two of the largest covered bridges in the United States are both approximately 30 minutes from Donna’s Premier Lodging. The Spellacy Bridge near Loudonville is 300 feet long. The Bridge of Dreams near Brinkhaven is 370 feet long.
Reservations are more readily available during the week.

Reservations at Donna’s Premier Lodging on a weekend can fill up months in advance. If you want to surprise your wife with a spur of the moment getaway, book a room mid-week. As an added bonus, room prices are often cheaper during the week. Rooms booked for a Monday through Wednesday can be $50 cheaper per night than a room booked Friday through Sunday. Those savings make your getaway more affordable or could go towards a special excursion or dinner.
Some attractions are only available during the work week.

Guggisberg Cheese Company is a favorite stop for visitors to Ohio Amish Country. When you visit the factory store, you can shop for more than 60 types of cheese as well as browse for an authentic cuckoo clock, beer stein, and local goods. A special treat at Guggisberg is the opportunity to watch the cheese being made. The cheese making hours are Monday through Friday from 9 am until noon. You will miss half of the fun if you go on the weekend.

At weddings they often dine on fried chicken, mashed potatoes, stuffing, salad, cake or cupcakes, fruit, and ice cream. With just a few recipes, you can enjoy Amish cooking in your own home. When you stay at Donna’s Premier Lodging, you are treated to a hot Amish-inspired breakfast every morning. Recreating these recipes together at home is a great way to remember all the fun you had on your Ohio Amish Country getaway.

Amish-Style Mashed Potatoes
This one is a favorite of the innkeeper. Her family has been making mashed potatoes this way since she was a little girl.

Ingredients:

Potatoes
½ stick butter
4 ounces cream cheese
¼ cup sour cream
½ cup milk

Directions:

Peel the potatoes and cut into chunks.
Put the potato chunks in a medium kettle. Add 1 cup of water.
Simmer the potato chunks until they are tender when pierced by a fork.
Drain and mash the potato chunks.
Add the remaining ingredients to the mashed potato chunks. Mash again until everything is nice and fluffy.
Some types of potatoes may require more milk to get the desired consistency. Add small amounts of extra milk while continuing to mash if necessary.
Served with browned butter or gravy. Delicious!

Amish Noodle Casserole
Casseroles are the ultimate easy dinner. This recipe makes enough for the whole family to have a second helping. This particular recipe follows the Amish tradition but you can play around to make it your own. Use chicken instead of beef, try a different style of noodle, add vegetables, or use a different flavor of condensed soup. Play around with the recipe until your find your family’s favorite version.

Ingredients:

500 g egg noodles (or pasta of your choice)
1 tbsp olive oil
1 onion, chopped
2 tsp garlic, crushed
750 grams lean ground beef
600 grams condensed tomato soup
600 grams condensed mushroom soup
1 cup milk
½ tsp paprika
½ tsp dried parsley
Salt and black pepper to taste

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Add water to a large pot and set to high on the stove.
Spray a large oven dish with cooking spray.
Once the water is boiling, cook the noodles according to the instructions on the package.
Heat olive oil over medium high heat in a sauté pan.
Sauté the onion and garlic in the pan until soft.
Add the ground beef to the onion and garlic mixture. Sauté until beef is cooked through.
Drain noodles once cooked and return to the pot.
Add cooked meat, onion, and garlic mixture to the noodles and stir.
Add both soups and the milk to the noodle mixture. Stir thoroughly.
Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Put entire mixture in oven dish. Sprinkle the top with paprika and parsley.
Bake for 25-30 minutes.

Amish Peanut Butter Spread
Peanut butter is one of the world’s perfect foods. The Amish have found a way to make it even better. Sometimes called “church spread,” this peanut butter recipe has tasty uses beyond a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Try it alone on bread or add a dollop to the top of your ice cream.
Ingredients:

1 cup light corn syrup
½ cup smooth peanut butter
¼ cup marshmallow crème

Directions:

Mix all three ingredients in a bowl until completely mixed together.
Enjoy!
Store any leftovers (if there are any) in an air-tight container.

No-Bake Amish Dessert
Do you ever find yourself craving a cool, refreshing dessert? The Amish have perfected this dessert that is great for family gatherings or pot lucks.
Ingredients:

2 ½ cups graham cracker crumbs
½ cup melted butter
¼ cup sugar
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
½ cup powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 ½ cups heavy whipping cream (can substitute 8 ounces of Cool Whip if you prefer)
2 cans pie filling (cherry, blueberry, raspberry, and blackberry are great options)

Directions:

Crush the graham crackers into crumbs.
Mix the crumbs with the melted butter and sugar to form the crust.
Press the crust mixture into the bottom of a 9X13” dish. Set the dish aside.
Beat the cream cheese until creamy.
Add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract to the cream cheese and mix well.
Add heavy whipping cream to the cream cheese mixture. Beat on high speed until thick and creamy. Make sure to scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl with a spoon to get consistent creaminess throughout.
Use a spoon to put large dollops of the cream cheese mixture on top of the graham cracker crust. Carefully spread to make an even layer.
Spread your pie filling of choice on top of the cream cheese mixture.
Refrigerate for a couple of hours before serving. Keep leftovers refrigerated.

Ohio’s Amish Country offers many romantic date ideas. The area is associated with a slower way of life. Most of the Amish community does not use electricity or travel via automobile. Instead, they focus on family, community, and the joy of a quiet life. Exploring that lifestyle allows for gentle moments together as you sip coffee or wine, look at the stars, or travel in a buggy or wagon. If you are looking for a romantic getaway filled with opportunities to connect with your loved one, come to Ohio Amish Country and try some of these activities.

Take time to smell the coffee. Literally. We live in a go, go, go world and it can be hard to find time to sit back and relax. Coffee shops are built for the quiet luxury of time. There is often background music and the quiet hum of conversation. The best part is that there is no expectation of a time limit. Go ahead, order a couple lattes then sit and enjoy each other’s company for as long as you want. Try out Buggy Brew Coffee Co. in Sheiyah Market and do a little shopping before or after your coffee. Get to Wallhouse Coffee Co. early if you want to make sure to get one of their delicious baked goods. Order a classic sourdough donut to share (they are big enough) from Amish Country Donuts & Cafe .
Explore the area together on a horse and buggy ride. Mel’s Horse Buggy Rides offers an authentic experience for you and your loved one. It can be difficult to enjoy the scenery from a car because you are driving too fast to really see anything. Plus, one of you is driving and must keep their eyes on the road instead of looking at the barns, pastures, and small towns. A bucolic horse and buggy ride is the perfect time to hold hands and watch the world go by at a nice leisurely pace. Of course, this activity is best enjoyed on a gorgeous weather day but can also be fun on a crisp fall afternoon.
Sample local wines together. When you visit a winery you are often given the opportunity to try tasters of a few different bottles. Once you find something you like, you can purchase a glass or bottle to enjoy at the winery. We welcome you to purchase a bottle to enjoy in your guest room at Donna’s Premier Lodging; all of our rooms have a corkscrew in the kitchenette or kitchen. One of the best things about visiting a winery is purchasing a bottle to open at a later date. Months from now when you open that bottle, you will be able to reminisce about all the fun times you had together in Ohio Amish Country. There are a few wineries in the area. We especially like Raven’s Glenn Winery & Restaurant . The family-owned winery has been making their wines with locally grown grapes for more than 20 years. They also boast a fine dining restaurant on-site. Sunny Slope Winery is an unexpected treasure. The Sunny Slope General Store has been in business since 1927. The current owners of the general store established the winery in 2016. They promote a fun and festive atmosphere with frequent musical acts.
Gaze up at the stars together. The country roads of Ohio Amish Country are ideal for seeing amazing starry skies because there is little light pollution to dull the view. On a night when there is not much of a moon, you can literally see light years away. A stargazing date lends itself to discussions about the future and stories of the past. Try a local state park if you want to find a parking lot where you can get outside and look at the stars together. Bring a blanket if you want to lie out on the roof of your car. Mohican State Park is about 30 minutes away and people go to the Mohican Mountain Bike Trail staging area to look at the stars; the staging area is across Route 3 from the campground.
Visit an Amish farm and go for a wagon ride. There is something about visiting a farm, seeing all of the animals and fresh produce, that brings a note of exuberance to life. Many of the local farms welcome visitors and offer activities for the whole family. Yoder’s Amish Home offers buggy rides around the hay field. Make sure to tour the barn while you are there; it was built in 1885 and houses lots of baby animals in the springtime. No trip to Yoder’s would be complete without getting a few cookies from the bakery. The Farm at Walnut Creek is a working Amish farm that also boasts animals from six continents. There are all the animals you expect such as horses but you will also see zebras and kangaroos. You can hand-feed many of the farm’s 500 animals from a horse-drawn wagon ride.

Top Nature Activities in Ohio Amish Country

When people picture Ohio’s Amish Country, they see Amish markets and buggies and bucolic barns. Those are truly iconic features of the area. However, when some people go on vacation, they want to squeeze as many unique activities as possible into their getaway. They want history, culture, food, theater, shopping, and fun exercise. That last desire is why we recommend some spectacular activities that will bring you closer to nature.

Rails to Trails can be accessed in Millersburg, OH approximately 10 minutes from Donna’s Premier Lodging.

23 miles of paved trails run through Holmes County as part of the Great American Trail Rail. The Great American Trail Rail is 3,700 miles of trails connecting Washington state with Washington D.C.
The trail is used by hikers, bikers, and walkers. An adjoining lane is used by horse and buggies.
The 15-mile Fredericksburg to Killbuck part of the trail runs directly through Millersburg. Guests can access the trail at the historic Hipp Station train depot. The Hipp Station is the headquarters and visitor center for the Holmes County portion of the trail. The visitor center features wildlife displays, trail information, restrooms, and a covered picnic area.
Scenery along the route includes scenic swamplands where visitors may spot turtles, snakes, and birds. The trail also uses old railroad bridges to cross over streams.
Guests who want more mileage can travel to the Glenmont to Brinkhaven section of the trail. At this time, the 7.5-mile section is not linked directly to the Fredericksburg to Killbuck section.

Beach City Wildlife Area is approximately 20 minutes from Donna’s Premier Lodging.

The highlight of the 393-acre state wildlife area is Dundee Falls. The 15-foot falls can be enjoyed year-round.
Do not forget to look down into the rocky gorge below the falls. This stunning view can be missed if hikers focus only on the streaming water.
The trail to access the falls is approximately one mile. The trail is an easy hike but can be slippery if it has recently rained.
Bring your camera so you can take sweet selfies together by the waterfall.

The Wilderness Center is approximately 20 minutes from Donna’s Premier Lodging.

There are lots of trails to hike. Most are a mile or less so you can combine multiple trails to see a large portion of the Wilderness Center.
The Wildlife Observation Room boasts a wall of windows overlooking multiple feeders and a water feature. Visitors are almost guaranteed to spot birds at the feeders but other animals occasionally visit the area. Want a guaranteed animal spotting? Visit with the rescued animal ambassadors including a couple turtles.
Visit on the first Friday of each month when the Astronomy Club sets up multiple telescopes. The digital planetarium will aid in your enjoyment of the vast evening sky.
For those looking for a romantic picnic there are lots of picnic areas. Create your own picnic or request a snack basket from Donna’s Premier Lodging.
Up for a little friendly competition? There are scavenger hunts that you can complete both inside the Interpretative Building and outside on the trails.
Be sure to check the events calendar for upcoming activities during your Ohio Amish County getaway. Recent events include a chance to sip local beer while learning about plants, a group of knitting/crocheting enthusiasts who met in the Wildlife Observation Room to work on their individual projects, and a 5K or 10K run along the trails.
If you are traveling with children, the Nature Playscape is a playground built with natural materials. It is the perfect spot for kids to strengthen their imagination.
The TWC Interpretative Building is open Tuesday through Saturday. The trails are open daily from dawn to dusk.

Mohican State Park is approximately 30 minutes from Donna’s Premier Lodging.

The park boasts three distinct fishing areas where anglers can find the favorite catch. Clear Fork River is stocked with brown trout. Smallmouth bass frequent Wolf Creek. All the other streams in the area are home to largemouth bass, bluegill, and white crappie.
Several hiking trails are available for all abilities. Get striking views of the lake along the easy 0.75-mile Pleasant Hill Trail. Take photos at two waterfalls along the moderate 2-mile Lyons Fall Trail. Reward yourself with a covered bridge at the end of the difficult 2-mile Hemlock Gorge Trail.
National Geographic Explorer Magazine has designated the 25-mile Mohican Mountain Bike Trail as a “must ride” trail.
This is another great place for a picnic at one of the park’s six picnic areas.
The Mohican River is a popular spot for water activities such as tubing, canoeing, and kayaking.
Several equestrian trails meander through the park.

The History of Donna's Premier Lodging

In March of 2015 we posted a history of our popular Ohio inn known for romance. It was a true love letter from Donna Marie Golden to the business she has built from the ground up. Today, Donna Marie continues to welcome couples looking for an Amish Country getaway. She has also added new and exciting amenities for guests and advances to business procedures. Nine years later we are celebrating our history with a reprint of the original post along with expanded and edited information about the growth since 2015. Join us on a walk down memory lane.
We often times get guests wondering how Donna’s Premier Lodging started. I sat down with Donna Marie this week and got the scoop…
In 1988, Donna Marie Golden bought an Amish home that would later become Donna’s Premier Lodging. Her initial intentions were to renovate the house into a rental property (duplex). In the middle of renovations she decided to turn the lower section into a Bed and Breakfast room called the Country Heart Room and in May of 1991 Donna’s Country Bed and Breakfast opened for business.
It did not take long for Donna Marie to realize her passion and renovated the upstairs into three additional Bed and Breakfast rooms; Country Bear, Peaches and Cream and the Dainty Heart Room.

It was during this time that Donna Marie interacted with many honeymoon and anniversary couples and decided that her next venture would be a romantic bed and breakfast type accommodation perfect for a couple’s getaway… complete with an in-room Jacuzzi and a gas log fireplace. When Donna Marie bought the Amish home back in ‘88 the property also came with a barn. Through Donna Marie’s vision this barn became what is now Cottage #1. With the popularity of Cottage #1, Donna Marie soon followed up with construction of Cottage #2.
In 1995 a property south of town with 6 wooded acres and a small cabin came available for purchase. Donna Marie jumped on the opportunity and renovated the cabin with a Jacuzzi and fireplace and aptly named this cabin the “Original Log Cabin.” Not long after, in 1996 Chalet #1 and #2 were built.
After purchasing a neighbor’s house beside the Cottages, more renovations began and the Bridal Suites came into fruition in early 1998. Below their house was a large garden which soon became the location of the three Villas in late ‘98.
In March 2001 construction on the Cedar Cabins began and were available for rent by July 2001. With the completion of the Cedar Cabins, Donna Marie saw the need for a larger office space and renovated the Bed and Breakfast rooms into what is now our commercial kitchen, office and lobby and Donna’s Country Bed and Breakfast became Donna’s Premier Lodging.
As of the writing of this post, the last renovation was in 2004. We converted the Country Heart Room (located in the main building) into what is now called the Sauna Suite. This renovation included more square footage allowing for the addition of a two-person Jacuzzi, a steam sauna, and a fireplace. The Country Heart Room was the original Bed & Breakfast room and it was lovingly updated to welcome even more couples in the years to come.

A 10’ x 10’ pavilion was completed on the main grounds in 2015. The pavilion boasts Azek hardwood flooring, a double roof, and lighting. It is a popular location for couples planning intimate weddings and elopements at the inn. The pavilion is near the garden waterfalls which makes a lovely backdrop for wedding photos

Technology has really changed the ways that Donna Marie and her staff can provide personalized service to guests. When the bed and breakfast began in 1991, there was no website. Instead there were mountains of brochures, confirmation letters, maps, and other paperwork. The website, email, texting, and social media has opened doors for convenient and efficient communication with guests. These days, guests can receive a text as soon as their room is ready so they can check in when it works best in their sightseeing schedule. Technology has also allowed staff to enjoy more family time as some operations can be handled remotely. Some guests have been coming for years and they remember the “good ole days” before all of the technological improvements but all of them appreciate the time that has been freed up to provide more one-on-one attention.
Donna Marie has been operating Donna’s Premier Lodging for 33 years and she still loves greeting guests who have become friends and working with employees who are more like families than staff. The Museums and Historical Sites of Ohio’s Amish Country

Ohio’s Amish Country is ripe with culture ranging from Amish and Mennonite history to a glass plant to pro football memorabilia. This post features 13 different museums and historical sites. Even if you visit two a day, you will still need an entire week to see them all. Of course, you can always plan multiple little trips throughout the year to see them all. Each museum or historical site is listed below, in alphabetic order, with three reasons why you should add that location to your Ohio Amish County vacation.
Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum

The museum features locomotives, railroad cars, tools, and machinery.
The building is also an active roundhouse specializing in the preservation of railroad history.
Since it is a working museum, visitors are allowed onsite via guided tours only. However, the guided tours guarantee behind-the-scenes information.

Amish & Mennonite Heritage Center

The highlight of the center is Behalt, a 265-foot circular mural depicting Amish and Mennonite history.
The center also features a pre-civil war, one-room school house and a pioneer barn with an Amish buggy display.
Stop into the bookstore and gift shop for local crafts, handmade baskets, and a selection of books about Amish and Mennonite culture.

BibleWalk

Ohio’s only wax museum features 325 wax figures portraying 100 biblical scenes.
The interactive exhibits include sound effects and dialogue.
While parts of the museum have fees, there are free exhibits including a rare bible collection, Christian art gallery, and American votive folk art.

David Warther Carvings

The exhibit includes more than 90 carvings made from antique ivory, ebony wood, and abalone pearl.
David Warther works in his on-site workshop daily. There is a high chance you will get to see him working on a piece when you visit.
The carvings depict the “History of the Ship.” The museum has five rooms focusing on different eras of shipbuilding.

Erb’s Coleman Lantern Museum

Erb services Coleman lanterns and started a collection three decades ago.
The museum houses more than 3,000 Coleman items.
Along with lanterns, visitors will see gas cooking stoves, ice chests, irons, hot plates, and advertising.

Ernest Warther Museum and Gardens

The museum includes hand-sculpted pieces that focus on the steam-engine.
The museum is owned and operated by third and fourth generation family members and it includes the Warther Family Home, “Button House,” Ernest’s workshop, and an arboretum.
Ernest Warther was David Warther’s grandfather (see David Warther Carvings above).

German Culture Museum

Visitors are treated to a snapshot of life in Holmes County and Walnut Creek Township during the 19 ^th and 20 ^th
The museum features artifacts relating to Joseph Stutzman, the “Father of Amish Country.”
Exhibits include a surrey which is a doorless, four-wheeled carriage.

Historic Roscoe Village

The town, along the Ohio & Eric Canal, was originally built in 1830 and restored 50 years ago.
Self-guided living history tours are available daily from 10am until 4pm.
See the city along a unique horse-drawn canal boat ride.

Killbuck Valley Historical Society and Museum

Learn about the natural and cultural history of the region.
Venture into the taxidermy section for birds and small game native to the area.
Every visit is different because the museum features rotating displays.

Millersburg Glass Museum

The museum features Millersburg Carnival and Crystal glass made between 1909 and 1912.
Visitors can also learn about the history of the local glass plant.
The glasswork is cherished by collectors. Some of the items on display are on loan from private collections.

Open Air Art Museum

The museum features art created by local and regional artists using a variety of mediums.
The Haiku Walk boasts 30 large stones with gingko leaf-shaped steel plates engraved with haiku poems in both English and traditional Japanese characters.
Woven is a massive installation that used materials found on the grounds of the Open Air Art Museum.

David Warther Carvings This is a two-for-one stop with a museum of delicate ivory carvings and a fine gift shop. The museum collection houses 80 miniature carvings of sailing ships from throughout history. All of them are created from legal antique ivory and ebony wood. David Warther carved his first ship at age six and has not stopped yet. The gift shop is known for its unusual and ever-changing assortment of products with an emphasis on home decor. Mixed among the Amish brooms, glassware, and pottery are quirky children’s toys, puzzles, and jewelry. P. Graham Dunn The 20,000 square foot retail store is located within the manufacturing facility. There are windows and viewing areas throughout the store that allow visitors to get a birds-eye view of the entire production process. P. Graham Dunn started as a family-owned business in 1976. In 2019 it transitioned to become an employee-owned business. This is a great spot to customize gifts; they have lasers in the store and can do custom engravings on the spot. Fall Activities in Ohio Amish Country

The air is crisp, the leaves are changing, and everyone wants to get outside and enjoy the season. Fall is an important time in Amish Country as farmers get to reap the benefits of their hard work. Lucky for visitors to the area, there is always more apples, pumpkins, and fall fun to go around. Come to Berlin, Ohio to celebrate the harvest season with us.

Farm Fresh Pumpkins and Apples

If the changing leaves are the first fall image that comes to mind, then pumpkins and apples are certainly the second and third most iconic representations of fall. Pumpkins are perfect decorations whether you carve them into jack-o-lanterns or not. Apples are one of the most versatile fruits since they can be eaten whole, included in salads, or made into amazing desserts. Start a new fall tradition by going straight to the farm and into the fields to choose your pumpkins and apples.

Hershberger’s Farm and Bakery is a fall treat for all your senses. See the fields full of produce. Smell the fresh baked goods. Hear the animals in the petting zoo. Touch and carry a heavy pumpkin. And, of course, taste the delicious food. Hershberger’s is an Ohio Amish Country establishment that should not be missed. They have already started harvesting pumpkins and making pies for 2023.
Moreland Fruit Farm has different items available to pick yourself depending on the season. They start with strawberries in June and end with apples and pumpkins in the fall. If you want to see and experience the fields in a more relaxing way, enjoy a horse drawn wagon ride through the pumpkin fields.
Ramseyer Farms has many types of pumpkins that you can pick yourself. This is a great place for specialty pumpkins such as white pumpkins, pie pumpkins, Cinderella pumpkins, and Fairytale pumpkins. They charge admission in September and October but that fee gives you access to 50 different activities. Try the country coaster, the chalk truck, the tractor pull, the rubber duck races, the giant rocking chair, and multiple mazes (see below).
Hillcrest Orchard of Walnut Creek Ltd boasts 75 acres of orchards that grow 22 varieties of apples. Their store is open seasonally from August until March. Schedule time to sip their signature apple cider while enjoying views of Mud Valley from the deck.

Corn Mazes

If you love a challenge, then corn mazes are just the activity for you. These mazes may be temporary but that does not lessen the fun and excitement. Come back year after year for a new maze.
Nickajack Farms grows 15 acres of tall corn each year just to create a maze. They are open every day from September 15 until October 31 for their Pumpkin Days Fall Festival. The event has been steadily growing for 19 years as the farm adds more and more activities. Enjoy the maze, hayrides, pony rides, peddle carts, pumpkin bowling, food trucks and more. Take the wagon grain out to the pumpkin fields to choose from 75 varieties of pumpkins, gourds, and squash.
Ramseyer Farms features two corn mazes each year. The Ohio Maze includes two miles of trails on eight acres but everything is labeled to help you find your way. The maze also boasts 275+ signs with information about the state, sports figures, famous Ohioans, and more. It is both fun and educational. The Mystery Maze is also two miles of trails on eight acres but it is a bit more challenging. Ramseyer recommends scheduling 30-60 minutes or more to complete the Mystery Maze. Events and Festivals

Ohio’s Amish Country Quilt Festival – September 7-9, 2023 – The festival features classes and trunk shows, a vendor mall, quilt show, and quilt contest. Admission to the vendor mall and quilt show is free if you attend a paid class.

Tuscarawas County Fair – September 18-24, 2023 – The week-long event has a jam-packed schedule of activities with rides, livestock events, and evening entertainment.
Woosterfest – September 29-30, 2023 – The annual Oktoberfest-style festival is held in downtown Wooster. There is free entertainment, food vendors, a bier and winegarten, and hilarious activities for all ages. Do not miss the beer stein race, corn hole tournament, sausage toss, or wiener dog race.

Trees really are magnificent plants. Many give us beautiful pink or white flowers in the spring. In summertime, they are covered in verdant greens. In the fall, they stun us with oranges, reds, and yellows. They are even quite lovely when their bare branches are covered in snow. Mohican State Park

If you are ready for a bit more effort, the Lyons Fall Trail is two miles in length and graded as moderate to difficult. Your determination will be rewarded with two waterfalls. Of course, you can always use one of the six picnic areas to linger over lunch amidst the beauty of the trees. If you are planning to visit Mohican State Park, you should note that the leaves here tend to change a little earlier than the rest of the state.
Gateway to Amish County Scenic Byway
Head west from Berlin to this 30-mile scenic byway. You can pick up the byway in either Greer or Brinkhaven, both locations are approximately 30 minutes from Berlin. The trails from each meet up in Danville before continuing south to Martinsburg which is about one hour from Berlin. These byways were once vacated railroad beds. The citizens of Knox County saw a great opportunity to transform the railroad beds into sightseeing trails through the towns and countryside. As you drive along in the fall months, you will see the reds, oranges, and yellows of maples, oak, and buckeyes alongside vast fields of corn. A highlight of this byway can be found near Brinkhaven. The “Bridge of Dreams” is the second longest covered bridge in the state and the third longest in the country. The 370-foot long bridge was constructed in 1920 to serve as a railroad bridge over the Mohican River Valley. In the late 1990s the bridge was converted to a pedestrian bridge making it the longest covered bridge for pedestrians. Today, the bridge is shared by pedestrians, those on horseback, and Amish horse and buggies.
Covered Bridge Scenic Byway
Is there anything more bucolic than a covered bridge with the changing leaves in the background? The Covered Bridge Scenic Byway features four romantic covered bridges as it traverses the Ohio countryside. Wear picture worthy outfits and stop at each bridge for a sweet selfie or ask another tourist for an endearing full-length photograph. This is a great opportunity for the perfect Christmas card photo. The 35-mile byway runs parallel to the Little Muskingum River and includes ten markers that allow visitors to explore on a self-guided tour. Along with the bridges, the tour stops at a mail pouch barn, an oil well, a boarding house, a general store, an historic stone house, and a small cemetery. If you decide to stop at each of the markers, it is recommended that you allot four hours to see everything. If you travel the byway from north to south, you will start in Woodsfield which is approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes from Berlin. The southern end of the byway can be found in Marietta which is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes from Berlin.

The Downtown Square is the center of Berlin’s music scene every Friday night from the end of May until mid-September. Music on the Square begins at 7 pm and features local and regional artists. This year, Finish Line will be playing on the Friday of Father’s Day weekend. The bluegrass band is based out of Millersburg. Father’s Day may be June 18 but you can celebrate the dads in your life all month long. June 2 is singer-songwriter Ren Rocks; June 9 is country music with 39-West; June 23 is John Schmid with a combination of country, folk, and gospel; and June 30 is Lena Mullet with Christian music. The Square is only a couple blocks away from Donna’s.

Treat your special guy to a round of golf for Father’s Day. Play the round with him or just drive the golf cart and cheer him on along the course. Fire Ridge Golf Course in Millersburg showcases the rolling hills of Holmes County. The front and back nine are each unique in their design. He has spent years as a sitcom warm-up act and is known for his good, clean comedy. For the guys who love music there are two tribute acts that are not to be missed. Richie Santa will be on stage with his band on June 7. Richie is an Elvis impersonator who captures all of the best of the King of Rock-n-Roll. Another classic music act is immortalized by Queen Flash on June 21. The 6-piece band has all the energy of a real Queen concert.

People are celebrating Hanukkah, the Winter Solstice or Yule, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and Chinese New Year. Don’t forget about December and January birthdays and anniversaries, work holiday parties, ugly sweater contests, and cozy winter date nights. The Amish also celebrate a holiday on January 6 each year.
In the Amish tradition, January 6 is referred to as Old Christmas. Under the Julian calendar, the birth of Jesus was celebrated on January 6. Pope Gregory XIII changed the calendar to the one used today, the Gregorian calendar, in the late 1500s. The Pope did so to match the calendar closer to the seasonal cycle. In order to do so, he had to remove 11 days from the calendar that year. In doing so, Pope Gregory XIII moved the celebration of Christ’s birthday to December 25. Some groups, like the Amish, have chosen to continue to honor his birthday on January 6.

How Do the Amish Celebrate These Holidays?

On Christmas Day, the Amish celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ in a similar fashion to many non-Amish families:

The Amish have a strong sense of community. They have their own norms, traditions, and ways of life. Because they are a more insular community there are often assumptions made about the Amish. Many of these are misconceptions of the truth about a community that has changed little yet continues to be strong. Approximately 80,000 members of the Amish community live in Ohio. That is the second-largest population of Old World Amish in the world.

Do the Amish Go to Church?

Yes. Typically, the Amish attend church every other week. Unlike other religions that have specific buildings dedicated to prayer and church services, the Amish hold Sunday services within a member’s home. The hosts will spend the week before the service preparing food and cleaning. The service lasts three hours and everyone stays afterwards to visit and eat together. Church services held in homes is a way that the Amish so how strongly religion is tied to everyday life. As an added benefit, the entire community gets together as a whole group 26 times each year. They say that it takes a village to raise a child. In this case, it takes a whole community to add strength and wisdom to that community.

What Is the Role of Amish Women in Their Community?

The couple that exercises together stays together. Work up a sweat while keeping yourself healthy so that you can spend many more years together. The Holmes County Trail is 22 miles of paved trail from Fredericksburg to Killbuck and Glenmont to Brinkhaven. There are plans for another seven miles of trail to be completed in the future. You may be lucky enough to spot a horse and buggy while traversing the trail because it is the first trail in the nation to accommodate Amish buggies. One side of the trail is “paved” with “chip and seal” making it horse friendly. Observation decks along the trail offer a quiet place to spot wildlife or simply soak up the sounds of nature. The word “picnic” oftens brings up images of a couple sitting on a gingham blanket while enjoying a warm, sunny day. Recreate your own picnic image at the Millersburg Depot or at the trailheads in Killbuck and Glenmont. Trail information and restrooms can be found at the Millersburg Depot/Hipp Station.

Mustard Dipping Sauce Recipe

If you've ever had the pleasure of enjoying one of these platters then you know that we include our special Mustard Dipping Sauce with them. It is absolutely scrumptious and I could eat it on just about anything! �55357;�56843; We've gotten so many requests for the recipe over the years that I thought I'd go ahead and share our secret recipe!! It's not hard and it's sooo easy to make.

Mustard Dipping Sauce

4 cups brown sugar
1 cup yellow mustard
1/4 cup honey mustard
1/4 cup southwest spicy mustard
1/4 cup spicy brown mustard
1/4 cup horseradish mustard
1/4 cup dijon mustard

In fact, Sunday may be the best day of the week to visit or extend your overnight stay since there’s typically not crowds and has more of a “laid back” feeling. Are you wondering why a lot of businesses are closed on Sundays in Amish Country? We found this information from OhiosAmishCountry.com :

Why Closed on Sunday? With the help of Paul J. Miller, former executive director of The Amish & Mennonite Heritage Center in Berlin, many answers to why Amish and Mennonite businesses are closed on Sunday are explained. Miller and his knowledgeable staff at the center deal with many questions about the Amish community. If you’ve got a question or don’t understand as much as you’d like about the Plain People who don coverings and still drive a horse and buggy, The Amish & Mennonite Heritage Center is a definite destination.
With an estimated population of 36,000-38,000 Amish residents in Holmes, Wayne, Tuscarawas, Coshocton and even Ashland counties, the culture is diverse. One question Miller is always asked is “Why are Amish businesses closed on Sundays?” In a world that operates 24/7, locking the doors to potential customers on Sundays makes many visitors scratch their heads.

However, the decision to close on Sundays and not to perform labor goes back centuries to the core beliefs of the culture.
“The Amish believe the Bible speaks to them and is meant to be a guide for everyday living,” explained Miller. “So, when the fourth commandment reminds us to ‘Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy,’ and further says the Lord God created the heavens and the earth and all that is in it in six days, and then rested on the seventh day (Exodus 20:8), the only faithful response can be, how can we ‘keep it holy?’

“For the Amish, that means worship, reading the scriptures, prayer, reading other inspirational, wholesome materials—and rest.”
Furthermore, the Amish “do not pursue the goal-oriented, gainful employment or wealth production of daily life. In their view, to keep their Amish businesses open to produce profit and revenue, even if in a public service, does not honor God or keep the Sabbath holy.”
While daily chores such as caring for animals still need done on Sundays, work is kept to a minimum. The Mennonite businesses also close on Sundays for the same reasons. Amish business owners do not fear the loss of revenue on Sunday. Actually, they put their faith in God. “They believe that God will provide all that one needs if they honor God’s commands for balanced, wholesome living. Any revenue lost by being closed on Sunday probably would not be essential for survival,” noted Miller.

Our Hot Country Breakfast is our most popular add-on package here at Donna's. Our guests love to pamper themselves with a full-course breakfast delivered right to their accommodation in the morning. Our Hot Country Breakfast includes an entrée, a side dish and a beverage for each guest and costs only $20 per couple (per morning). WOW! That also includes delivery! And in my opinion there's really nothing better than eating breakfast in your PJ's during a getaway.

We're so excited to announce that we have added several NEW entrées to our Hot Country Breakfast menu! We featured our Sunrise Skillet in a special package over the summer and it met with such high praise that we have added it to our permanent menu!! And I can attest that it is absolutely delicious! It's become my new favorite breakfast dish.
We also have added a Vegan Hash for guests that prefer a no-animal products breakfast. Pair it with our fresh fruit cup and you've got yourself a filling and cruelty-free breakfast!

Today I'm answering some frequently asked questions about our Gift Cards...
✮Do you sell Gift Cards?
Yes we do! In fact we sell hundreds over the holiday season. They are available in any denomination.
✮How do I purchase a Gift Card?

✮Do I have to know the dates the recipient wants to reserve?
No, the recipient can choose whatever dates and accommodation they'd like. Our Gift Cards are also good for our add-on packages (in-room massages, chocolate-covered strawberries, etc)
✮How much should I make the Gift Card for?
Our rooms vary in price from approx $249-$349. Depending on the season and accommodation sometimes the rates are higher and sometimes they are lower. If you purchase a Gift Card for more than the cost of an overnight stay, then the recipient can use the remaining balance on add-on packages or save the balance to apply to a future stay. If the Gift Card doesn't cover the full amount; the recipient can pay the difference.

Miriam's Christmas Cut-out Cookie Recipe

If you've been looking for the perfect Christmas Cookie Cut-out Recipe - LOOK NO FURTHER!!!
A previous employee of Donna's shared her recipe with us a few years back and it has gotten rave reviews!! Tag us at #DonnasPremierLodging if you make them!

Miriam's Christmas Cut-out Cookies

1 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar
3 eggs
1/3 cup cream (Miriam’s insider tip is to use liquid French Vanilla coffee creamer in place of the cream)
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
4-5 cups flour

Cream white sugar, brown sugar and butter. Add eggs and mix well. Add the rest of the ingredients in the order listed. When adding the flour; add a little at a time mixing well after each addition. Let cool for about 2 hours. Roll out to 1/4 inch thickness and use Christmas themed cookie cutters of your choice to cut out. Place on cookie sheet 2 inches apart. Bake at 400 degrees for 8-10 minutes. Can be sprinkled with sugar crystals before baking or iced with icing of choice after cooling.

Our Amish Baked Oatmeal is always a guest favorite and today I thought I'd share the recipe. It's perfect for a cool fall morning! You can get creative with toppings and add fresh berries and homemade whipped topping! Some people also like to add raisins and/or nuts.
Ingredients:

1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 egg
2-4 tablespoons milk
1 cup HOT water
3/4 - 1 cup Quick Oats

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Mix brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, salt and egg together in a small mixing dish.
Add milk, water, and quick oats and stir to combine.
Transfer to individual baking dish.
Bake for 45 minutes in oven.

Serve with maple syrup, brown sugar, and steamed milk. Delicious!

Sunrise Skillet Recipe

Our new Sunshine & Wine Package for the summer has been a guest favorite so far (view details of this special as well as our other monthly special s HERE ) and rave reviews have been pouring in about our seasonal breakfast dish that's included with this package; the Sunrise Skillet. This seasonal special is one of my favorites that we've had this year and today I'm sharing our recipe. It comes together quickly and can be customized to fit your preference!

Sunrinse Skillet

Makes 1 serving

Ingredients:

2 eggs
2 T milk
2/3 cup potatoes with onions and peppers
1/4 cup sausage
1/2 cup country gravy
shredded cheese
salt and pepper (if desired)

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2. Wisk eggs and milk together in small bowl; add salt and pepper if desired. Pour into greased 6" skillet over medium heat.
3. Cook until eggs are set; flipping if necessary.
4. Put open face "omelet" in the bottom of a individual sized casserole dish.
5. Add potatoes with onions and peppers, then sausage, and top with country gravy.
6. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
7. Top with shredded cheese and bake for another 5-10 minutes or until cheese melts.

How It All Started

Have you ever wondered how Donna's Premier Lodging got started? If so, read on....
In 1988, Donna Marie Golden bought an Amish home that would later become Donna’s Premier Lodging. Her initial intentions were to renovate the house into a rental property (duplex). In the middle of renovations she decided to turn the lower section into a Bed and Breakfast room called the Country Heart Room and in March of 1991 Donna’s Country Bed and Breakfast opened for business. It did not take long for Donna Marie to realize her passion and renovated the upstairs into three additional Bed and Breakfast rooms; Country Bear, Peaches and Cream and the Dainty Heart Room.
It was during this time that Donna Marie interacted with many honeymoon and anniversary couples and decided that her next venture would be a romantic bed and breakfast type accommodation perfect for a couple’s getaway….complete with an in-room Jacuzzi and a gas log fireplace. When Donna Marie bought the Amish home back in ’88 the property also came with a barn. Through Donna Marie’s vision this barn became what is now Cottage #1. With the popularity of Cottage #1, Donna Marie soon followed up with construction of Cottage #2.
In 1995 a property south of town with 6 wooded acres and a small cabin came available for purchase. Donna Marie jumped on the opportunity and renovated the cabin with a Jacuzzi and fireplace and aptly named this cabin the “Original Log Cabin”. Not long after, in 1996 Chalet #1 and #2 were built. After purchasing a neighbor’s house beside the Cottages, more renovations began and the Bridal Suites came into fruition in early 1998. Below their house was a large garden which soon became the location of the three Villas in late ’98.
In March 2001 construction on the Cedar Cabins began and were available for rent by July 2001. With the completion of the Cedar Cabins, Donna Marie saw the need for a larger office space and renovated the Bed and Breakfast rooms into what is now our commercial kitchen, office and lobby and Donna’s Country Bed and Breakfast became Donna’s Premier Lodging.
The final major renovation came in 2004 when the space below the office became the Sauna Suite; complete with an invigorating in-room sauna. Today Donna’s Premier Lodging boasts 17 accommodations for couples all featuring an in-room Jacuzzi and a gas log fireplace – the perfect destination for a honeymoon or romantic get-a-way! We’ve expanded our package list for the ultimate experience and now offer in-room massages, chocolate covered strawberries, birthday cakes and a whole host of other add-on. So drop the kids off at grandmas for the weekend and take some time to rekindle the fire and see for yourself why Donna’s Premier Lodging has been a favorite vacation spot in Ohio since 1991.

Our guests just love these and it's the perfect recipe to surprise your sweetie with on Valentines Day with breakfast in bed! We call them Sweetheart Stratas because they are individually portioned and you can make them according to everyone's preferences. Each recipe serves 1.

Ingredients

♥ 3 eggs ♥ 1/2 cup milk ♥ 1/4 tsp salt ♥ 1/2 tsp ground mustard ♥ 1/8 tsp black pepper ♥ 1 cup of bread cut into 1-inch cubes ♥ 1/4 - 1/2 cup cheese ♥ 1 cup veggies and/or meats (we like onions, mushrooms, red and green peppers, crumbled bacon, ham, and sausage)

Directions

♥ Preheat oven to 350 degrees. ♥ Mix together eggs, milk, salt, ground mustard, and black pepper. Then add in bread and veggies/meats. Stir until well incorporated. ♥ Pour into individual baking dish. ♥ Cover and bake for 1 hour. Top with more cheese and bake until melted.

While our area might be known for our pan fried chicken and mashed potatoes that rival your grandma’s we also have several restaurants that offer a slightly more eclectic menu.

East Main Kitchen | Baltic, Ohio

Their catch-phrase is “Comfort Food – With a Twist” and boy do they deliver on that. If you like Mexican cuisine, I can’t recommend their Thursday night Chipotle Bowls enough! Rebecca artfully creates an elegant menu and incorporates quality ingredients and uses locally grown, seasonal, fresh fruits and vegetables. You must try her famous Tomato Basil Soup; it is so creamy and comforting! Do you guys hear my stomach growling from just thinking about her soup?! Are you interested in learning more about Ohio 's Amish Country? With so many attractions in the area, I know it's hard to know where to start. Peanut Butter Sandwich Cookie Recipe

Have you tried our Peanut Butter Sandwich cookies yet? Our repeat guests rave about our Peanut Butter Sandwich cookies and many of them will even order a dozen or two to take back home. We've made these for our guests for as long as I can remember; and they are delicious! And even better yet, they are easy to make.

Ingredients:

1 Cup butter
1 Cup creamy peanut butter
1 Cup white sugar
1 Cup packed brown sugar
1 Teaspoon vanilla extract
3 Eggs
4 Cups all-purpose flour
2 Teaspoons baking soda
¼ Teaspoon salt

Filling:

½ Cup creamy peanut butter
3 Cups confectioners' sugar
1 Teaspoon vanilla extract
5-6 Tablespoons milk

Directions:

In a mixing bowl, cream butter, peanut butter and sugars. Add vanilla.
Add eggs one at a time beating well after each addition.
Mix flour, baking soda and salt in a separate bowl.
Add to mixture in mixing bowl.
Shape into 1 inch balls and place 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets.
Flatten with tines of a fork.
Bake at 375 degrees for 5-6 minutes (important so that you don't over bake!!).
Remove from oven and leave on cookie sheet for 2-3 minutes to allow the cookies to continue absorbing the heat from the cookie sheet. They should be slightly brown on the bottom.
Cool on wire racks.
In a mixing bowl, combine and mix the filling ingredients until smooth.
Spread on half of the cookies and top each other with another cookie.
Yields 5 dozen.

Most visitors to Amish country come to the area looking to have good, down-home, Amish comfort food. But where do you go to find this deliciousness? There are many different options, some that you are familiar with and some that you may not be real familiar with.

Cindy's Diner , located on the corner of SR 39 & 62, features a relaxed 1950's style atmosphere and some of the best barbeque you'll find anywhere. Award winning ribs, enormous banana splits, and "Diner Dogs" (one of my favorites!) are just a few of the specialties you'll find at Cindy's.

Since opening in 1938, the oldest operating restaurant in the village of Berlin, Boyd and Wurthmann Restaurant , has been serving visitors and locals alike, with authentic Amish style foods in a classic diner atmosphere. With its location on Main Street in Berlin, it's easily accessible for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Berlin Farmstead , Der Dutchman and Dutch Valley are sister restaurants owned by Dutchman Hospitality and all feature a fabulous salad and buffet bar, as well as a delectable menu to order from. Der Dutchman and Dutch Valley also have full service bakeries attached to the restaurants, where you can purchase baked goodies to take with you when you go. With locations in Berlin, Walnut Creek and Sugarcreek, you are never too far away from some goodness!!

Mrs. Yoder's Kitchen in Mt. Hope is fast becoming THE place to eat. This restaurant features a wonderful menu to order from and a “special menu” buffet a couple times a month, as well as one of the best breakfast buffets available on Saturday mornings. One visit to Mrs. Yoder’s will tell you why everyone keeps coming back!

Chalet in the Valley is more than just an Amish style restaurant; it is an Amish, Swiss and German style restaurant. Not only are you able to get your favorite comfort food favorites such as roast beef and mashed potatoes, but maybe you are in the mood for some Fondue, Bratwurst or Schnitzel. This is the definitely the place to go! They are also the only Amish style restaurant open on Sunday’s featuring a mouth-watering buffet from 11am-3pm, from March – Dec. Stop in and have a taste!

If you are staying for more than a couple days and have had your fill of comfort food and need to change it up a bit, Amish County has you covered in that department as well! Bags Sports Pub has two locations, one in Millersburg and one in Sugarcreek. From salads, to burgers, to delicious steak entrees and everything in between, Bag’s is a great choice for food and atmosphere, and not what you would normally find in Amish Country. And if you want my opinion, you have to try a pretzel bun! Um – AMAZING!!

Other Casual Dining restaurants that are a must to check out are Warehouse Steak N’ Stein , Olde World Bakery and Bistro and Rebecca’s Bistro . The Warehouse Steak N Stein would be about 45 minutes away from Berlin, but features some awesome food and occasionally live entertainment on Saturday nights. Olde World Bakery and Bistro is the newest restaurant in Berlin and have grown in popularity so much, they are about to open a second location in Millersburg. They are a farm to table restaurant, so everything on the menu is the freshest available. Rebecca’s Bistro is open for breakfast and lunch and features delicious gourmet food! From three-egg omelets to stuffed French toast for breakfast to salads, soups and sandwiches for lunch, Rebecca’s only uses the best from local suppliers. The menu can change week to week, based on the availability of what she can get that week. A visit to Rebecca’s requires planning in advance, I have heard the wait for a table can be an hour or more, and reservations are not accepted. Plan an early or late lunch to beat the crowd or sip a delicious lemonade or cup of coffee while you wait!

We all know a stay at Donna’s means ROMANCE! Maybe you are looking for a special romantic dinner. Amish Country has that for you as well! The Tarragon Restaurant at The Inn at Honey Run sits in the heart of the country and offers a fantastic view from the dining room. Celebrate an Anniversary, Birthday or that special night out! Shy Cellars in Strasburg, Ohio is just a stone’s throw away and features a delicious, gourmet menu that changes daily. Chef Sherry and her staff have thought of everything and you will leave feeling fully satisfied. Raven’s Glenn Winery would be about 45 minutes from Berlin, sitting on the banks of the Tuscarawas River, and is a local winery with a tasting bar and delicious Italian restaurant. Ask to be seated by the window or during the summer months enjoy a glass of wine on the back patio and enjoy the sights and sounds of the river.

Looking for something on the go? We have multiple fast food and pizza shops in the area as well. Fast food needs no explanation, you can find Burger King , Subway and Dairy Queen , all within five minutes from the office of Donna’s. Pizza can be delivered to your accommodation from East of Chicago Pizza or Fox’s Pizza and we have provided menus in your room for both. Just call and let them know you are staying at Donna’s and the room you are staying in and they will deliver right to your door. However, if you are looking for, in my opinion, the BEST pizza around, please check out Park Street Pizza in Sugarcreek, they will not deliver here, but they do have a really nice restaurant where you can dine in. Enjoy a classic Pepperoni and Cheese, Deluxe or Meat Lover’s Pizza; or maybe you feel adventurous and want to have a Reuben, Buffalo Chicken or Veggie Patch gourmet pizza. Park Street also boasts great salads, sandwiches and wings. You will not be disappointed!

Whatever strikes your fancy, you will find it here in Amish Country. I, personally, have been to all but one of these delicious restaurants and I can honestly say I have never left any of them unsatisfied. My mouth is watering just thinking of the yummy goodness and I am looking forward to my next visit! We will be glad to help with directions to any of the restaurants listed in this blog and have menus for most if not all of the restaurants in the office! Cottage Renovation

We have been busy this spring with lots of updates and improvements. One of the rooms that just got a makeover is Cottage #2. Our Cottages are always a guest favorite and we think the new updates will make it even more loved! We stripped the wallpaper, put in new carpet, updated the light fixtures, added new window treatments and much more! Below are some "Before" and "After" Pictures. Are you interested in learning more about the Amish lifestyle and culture? I recently came across a great article with answers to a lot of our guests frequently asked questions and thought I'd share it with you. I even learned a couple things! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Q. What Are the Differences Between Amish and Mennonite Groups? A. It is impossible to answer this question with a few simple sentences. There are so many varieties of Mennonites and Amish around the world that we cannot cover the many shades of belief and practice among them. However, most Mennonite and Amish groups have common historical roots. Both were part of the early Anabaptist movement in Europe, which took place at the time of the Reformation. A group led by Jacob Amman broke from the Mennonites in 1693 and became known as Amish. Amish and Mennonites are Christian fellowships; they stress that belief must result in practice. The differences among the various Amish and Mennonite groups through the years have almost always been ones of practice rather than basic Christian doctrine.
Q. What Are The Basic Beliefs Of The Amish? A. The Amish believe that:

The Bible is the inspired word of God
There is one God eternally existing as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Romans 8:1-17).
God loved the world so much that he gave his only son, Jesus, to die on the cross for the sins of the world.
Through faith in the shed blood of Jesus we are reconciled to God.
Salvation is by grace through faith in Christ, a free gift bestowed by God on those who repent and believe.
As Christians, we should live as brothers.
The Holy Spirit convicts of sin, and also empowers believers for service and holy living.
The church is separate from the State
We are committed to peace.
Faith calls for a lifestyle of discipleship and good works service and holy living

Q. Why Don't The Amish Use Electricity A. Amish people interpret linking with electrical wires as a connection with the world - and the Bible tells them they are not to be conformed to the world (Romans 12:2). In 1919 the Amish leaders agreed that connecting to power lines would not be in the best interest of the Amish community. They did not make this decision because they thought electricity was evil itself, but because easy access to it could lead to many temptations and the deterioration of church and family life. Most of us today think it impossible to live without the modern conveniences such as electricity and cars. What makes the Old Order Amish unique is not that they get along without modernity, but that they choose to do without it when it would be readily available. The Amish value simplicity and self-denial over comfort, convenience and leisure. Their lifestyle is a deliberate way of separating from the world and maintaining self-sufficiency. (Amish are less threatened by power shortages; caused by storm, disaster or war.) As a result there is a bonding that unites the Amish community and protects it from outside influences such as television, radios, and other influences.
Q. Why Will The Amish Ride In Automobiles If They Will Not Own Them? A. Maintaining Amish standards, but accepting some modernization to meet needs of living, requires compromise that must not disrupt the social structure. By rejecting certain types of modernity and accepting others, some Amish appear to the outside world to be contradicting themselves - hypocrites. Hover, from the viewpoint of Amish culture, there is no contradiction. One of the more pronounced inconsistencies is the use of automobile...although he may not own a car, a member may accept rides and willing hires an automobile with a driver to transport him from place to place. There was little hesitation when the Amish decided no to car ownership. It would separate the community in various ways. If only wealthy members could afford it, the cr would bring inequality. Proud individuals would use it to show off their status, power and wealth. Cars would speed things up dramatically, disrupting the slow pace of Amish living. So, they will use them but now own them, for then things will surely get of of control.
Q. Do The Amish Use Modern Medicine And Doctors? A. Most Amish and Mennonite groups do not oppose modern medicines. Their readiness to seek health services varies from family to family. Nothing in the Amish understanding of the Bible forbids them from using modern medical services, including surgery, hospitalization, dental work, anesthesia, blood transfusions, etc. They do believe, however, that good health, both physical and mental, is a gift from God and requires careful stewardship on the part of the individual. With few exceptions, physicians rate the Amish as desirable patients; they are stable, appreciative, and their bills will be paid. They do hot have hospitalization insurance, but they band together to help pay medical expenses for anyone of their group who needs financial assistance. A designated leader in the Amish community is given responsibility for their mutual aid fund.
Q. Do The Amish Pay Taxes? A. Self-employed Amish do not pay Social Security tax. Those employed by non-Amish employers do pay Social Security tax. The Amish do pay real estate, state and federal income taxes, county taxes, sales tax, etc. The Amish do not collect Social Security benefits, nor would they collect unemployment or welfare funds. Self sufficiency is the Amish community's answer to government aid programs. Section 310 of the Medicare section of the Social Security act has a sub-section that permits individuals to apply for exemption from the self-employment tax if he is a member of a religious body that is conscientiously opposed to Social Security benefits but that makes reasonable provision of taking care of their own elderly or dependent members. The Amish have a long history of taking care of their own members. They do not have retirement communities or nursing homes; in most cases, each family takes care of their own, and the Amish community give assistance as needed.
Q. Does Anyone Ever Join or Leave A. Anyone is welcome to join the Amish and Mennonites as long as they are willing to meet the requirements for membership. These requirements vary, as they are more rigid among the Amish and conservative Mennonites and more relaxed among moderate and liberal Mennonites. It is very rare for someone to join the Amish, but it does happen occasionally. People also leave the Amish and Mennonites. Most people who leave the Amish become Mennonites. The Amish particularly try to keep their children within the church. Some sects will shun family members who choose to leave, even if they leave to become Mennonite. Others do not and they maintain good relationships with their non-Amish family members.
Q. Why Do Amish Men Have Beards, But Not Mustaches? A. There are quite a few scriptures that mention beards in the Bible. An example would be Psalm 133:1-2. An Amishman does not shave his beard after he becomes married. A long beard is the mark of an adult Amishman. Mustaches, on the other hand, have a long history of being associated with the military, and therefore are forbidden among the Amish people.
Q. Why Do They Dress The Way They Do? A. The plain and simple dress of the Amish is an outward show of their inner convictions of humility and modesty. They also believe it is important to differentiate the roles between men and women, which is why Amish and many Mennonite women wear dresses. The head covers of the women are related to a biblical reference in 1 Corinthians 11, which emphasizes a need for women to have their head covered.
Q. Why Don't They Use Modern Technology? A. The Amish and Mennonites believe that God has called his followers to separate themselves from the world. They interpret that to mean that materialistic desires of the rest of the world should not be a part of their culture. Another important aspect of the Amish culture is the nature of their community. A more simple lifestyle, such as the use of horses and buggies for transportation, allows the Amish to maintain a close-knit community. Another big reason the Amish maintain a simple life without the addition of modern technology is simply because they understand that these new devices do not add any fulfillment to life.
Q. What Is Their Education System Like? A. While the majority of Mennonites embrace high school and college education, the Amish and some Mennonites do not think higher education is necessary. All Amish children do go to school at least until their eigth grade year. When the American education system still used one-room schoolhouses, the Amish integrated into the public school system. Some Amish still do, but many have chose to send their children to parochial schools specifically designed for the Amish. Most are one-room schoolhouses emphasizing reading, writing and arithmetic. While most of these are private schools, in Holmes County, the public school district has several schools set aside specifically for Amish students.
Although many would view this lifestyle as very difficult, the Amish consider it a precious privilege to be able to raise their children in a home and community setting that is a little more shielded from the technology, images, and interruptions that are a constant part of life amongst the non-Amish. We are so happy to announce that renovations at Chalet #1 are complete! This guest accommodation got lots of updates: we stripped the wallpaper and painted the walls, changed the carpet, updated decorations, replaced the couches, updated lighting fixtures and finishings and lots more!
